Winter is here. If you don’t want to risk costly insurance claims, then it’s time to winter proof your home.

You may not be able to change the weather, but here are some things you can do to avoid storm damage that can be caused by a storm.

First, insulate exposed water pipes, so they don’t freeze and crack when the temperature drops. Knowing how to shut off the water is important too, so if the pipes do crack, damage is minimized.

Second, insulate walls, crawl spaces, and attics. This will keep the heat inside and help prevent ice dams from forming on your roof.

Third, repair any damaged or loose shingles on your roof. Snow or ice that collects on a roof will make any existing damage and leak even worse.

Fourth, clean out drains and gutters, as a blockage can cause water to back up and freeze, potentially causing roof leaks or ice dams.

Finally, remove weak trees and branches, as these can fall on your home during a storm.

Taking these precautions is a good investment that can save you thousands of dollars and hours of frustration, so winter proof your home before a storm.
