President Joe Biden hosted Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on his state visit Wednesday, and announced a ramped-up level of defense and intelligence cooperation with America’s key Indo-Pacific ally.

The state visit included an array of practical measures such as announcements on defense pacts, as well as symbolic gestures in the form of cherry blossoms and a state dinner. What was the political message that President Biden and Mr. Kishida were sending, and how are China and Taiwan viewing this?
