A British diplomat dove into a river to save a drowning Chinese woman on Nov. 14. The video went viral on social media in China and he was hailed as hero.

61-year-old Stephen Ellison is the consul general of the UK to Chonqing, a sprawling municipality in southwestern China.

A video circulating on social captured a woman who appeared to slip on rocks, moments before falling into deep water in a river.

Online, many netizens found it disappointing that Ellison was the only one to step in, despite the crowd of Chinese onlookers.

According to one doctor from Beijing, named Zhao Zhongyuan, the Chinese Communist Party’s communist ideology has changed peoples’ normal standard of behavior.
