You should say “No” to raw cookie dough, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

We are well into the Christmas countdown, a time filled with delicious baked goods.

However, as tempting as it is to give a go at the sweet-smelling cookie before its baked, even if just to avoid wasting the leftover bits clinging to the edge of the bowl, you really shouldn’t do it—for the sake of your health.

According to CNN, the CDC is reminding all bakers that eating or tasting unbaked goods can cause sickness, especially with flour and raw eggs, which may contain bacteria and salmonella respectively.

Before you think that won’t happen to you, take note: one in six people in the United States gets sick from eating contaminated food, according to the CDC.

So wait until it’s baked. You can think of it this way—why risk of ruining a festive time because of food poisoning? What’s more, you may even find it more rewarding knowing you’ve conquered the temptation.

The CDC’s website has a full set of instructions for safe food handling.
