Concert Mistress: ‘It’s Not Just Anything, It’s Everything’

Following Billings, Shen Yun’s North America Company arrived in Salt Lake City for 5 performances.

Francine Potter, a violinist and composer, attended an evening performance with a friend at the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Theater on March 15.

“At one point, I looked over at him and he had a tear running down his face,” she said. “But they were happy tears, because we noticed near the end of the show, they came out with a very nice appropriate ending by letting people know that we believe in a Creator and that we’re not just presenting ideas down here without something behind them.”

As a professional musician herself, she appreciated the time and effort that brought the performance to life.

“Tonight when I heard this orchestra, and I saw all those notes, I thought, this is amazing! I know how much work goes into putting something like that together. I loved the different sounds of the instruments—it’s like different personality every time you turn around.”

Ms. Potter played with the Utah Symphony for many years and was a former Miss Utah. She is currently a concertmistress of the Paradigm Orchestra.

“The dance and the song and the orchestra—and that all combined together was really important. Because it gives you more than just—any one of them all by itself wouldn’t be as effective as all of those things happening at once. And the colors, and the dancing, and it’s like they’re flying in the air!”

At one point she looked around to see the expressions on the faces of fellow audience members.

“So many people that had wonderful looks on their faces, they’re not always, with all the political things that are happening nowadays, so nice to have happy faces!”

“It motivated me to want to do many things, with my music, and with my relationship with other people, and I know that everyone puts in a lot of time and energy to all of these and I feel like the people that put this together had their whole heart into it.”
