Getting ready for a night out is hard enough with putting on makeup, styling your hair, and deciding on the perfect outfit. But what happens when illness strikes and you can no longer do some of these things?

Theresa used to style her own hair but had to stop when she suffered a stroke. From then on, she was left looking for the perfect stylist. Little did she know he had been with her the whole time.

Theresa has been married to Andrew for 45 years, and a lot has happened in that time. They’ve had three children, all of whom have grown into adults and married. They taught their kids respect and a strong work ethic, as their son, Steve, can attest.

“My dad has always worked his tail off,” Steve told Babble. “He’s never expected or asked for anything. He traveled all the time as a salesman for an electrical company and gave everything he had to his family and his church.”

To show appreciation for their parents, Steve and his siblings wanted to give their mother a gift certificate for Mother’s Day to The Foundry Salon, which has been a favorite salon among the family.

They figured this would be a good gift for Theresa, since she wanted some more volume in her hair and she hadn’t been able to do much with it ever since her stroke 18 years prior.

After getting her hair done, Theresa was thrilled with the results, but it was only temporary.

“She got her hair done and fell in love with it,” Steve told Today Style. “That next morning, she took a shower and it fell down … She couldn’t get it back to the way they had styled it.”

Wanting to remedy this, Andrew and Theresa paid a second visit to the salon in New Braunfels, Texas. At first, the salon workers were baffled by what was going on, but when they found out that the old gentleman was about to purchase all of the products used on Theresa’s hair, hoping he could recreate the look at home, they were deeply moved.

“And once we found out, it was just one of those moments … and you look around and everyone was tearing up and crying,” Nicci Meyer, the salon’s operations coordinator said.

That’s when stylist Andrea Gomez came up with an idea.

“Instead of buying all this product,” said Steve, “Andrea stepped in and said, ‘Why don’t I teach you how to do it?’”

So she did. Another stylist named Raigen Kelley recorded the lesson on camera as Andrew learned the ins and outs of hair-styling. She later posted the video to Facebook.

“Proof that true love really exists,” Kelley wrote in the post. “Truly one of the best things I have been able to witness in my life. Brought tears to my eyes.”

Proof that true love really exists… she can no longer style her hair herself and her husband insisted on learning how to do it for her step by step. From products, to the way you hold the brush and dryer…truly one of the best things I have been able to witness in my life. Brought tears to my eyes..what an amazing man and what a lucky woman. ❤️Bless them

The video, posted on May 20, 2018, quickly went viral, with nearly 8 million views in less than a week! Many Facebook users, like the salon workers, were moved by the story. Some also said the couple reminded them of people they know.

“This is so sweet,” Leighton McLean wrote. “It reminded me of dad when he learned how to put mom’s hair in pony tail bc of her arm. he would so do this for her.”

“My late Uncle Joe did the same thinking for my Aunt Josie! He did her hair, makeup, fingernails, and carried her up a flight of stairs so he could sleep next to her! If that ain’t love, I don’t know what is!” Kim Tomanelli-Coulbourn wrote.

When Steve told his parents about the video’s success, they were glad but also very humble.

“My dad said, ‘Don’t make this about us. It’s not about us—it’s about the Foundry folks helping us out,’” Steve said.

It seems the Foundry folk’s help was fruitful. Steve soon noticed a difference in her mother’s hair, which he said “looked pretty good.”

For Andrew, the touching story is but one moment out of his 45 years of marriage with Theresa. The couple has helped each other in many ways throughout the years. Andrew used to travel a lot, and Theresa would look after their children. Later, when Theresa lost her mobility, Andrew assisted her without complaint and whole-heartedly. Three years prior to learning hair-styling, Andrew even found a part-time bus driving job so he could take care of Theresa.

Andrew hopes their story could inspire others to devote a little more effort to their marriage.

“This type of story may help some people, may get to them and touch them in a way that they just need to work a little harder with their relationships,” Andrew told Kens5. “You gotta just make things happen, instead of just giving up.”
