Some like them hot, some tangy, some go for sour, some for sweet. But any way you like them, pickles are hot, and extremely trendy too. Because they fit perfectly in a low-carb diet, that many people adhere to nowadays. They help cut carbs and calories. And food manufacturers are of course keen enough to latch on this trend and create an ever new variety of pickles to meet the ever-growing demands.

According to Fox News, Vlasic, a Conagra brand, is about to introduce a new pickle chip, that contains just one ingredient: pickle. The announcement was made by spokesman Thomas McGough, co-chief operating officer and executive vice-president of Conagra at Conagra’s Investor’s Day in Chicago on April 10, 2019.

“Pickles has always been a flavor that people have loved in snacks, whether it’s potato chips or even in our Bigs Vlasic dill sunflower seeds, but pickles themselves are a great snack, essentially no calories or carbs,” McGough said. “So we’ve created Vlasic single-serve pickle slices and also a Vlasic vacuum-fried pickle chips that taste absolutely fantastic.”

“As much as we’ve done, we are just getting started,” He continued, “Our categories are supported by strong underlying consumer trends, namely all things protein, plant-based nutrition and what we call ‘permissible indulgence.’”

Pickle lovers will still need to be patient; however, as no date has been announced yet when the 100 percent pickle chips will be available at your local grocery store.

New Jersey Restaurant Serves Sandwiches on a Pickle

A restaurant in New Jersey has redefined the term pickle sandwich by serving sandwiches on a sliced pickle instead of a slice of bread, Fox 5 reported.

“In a nutshell, we are a sandwich shop with no bread in the house,” said owner Katherine Cohen.

Customers can choose from specialty sandwiches on the menu like “The Harold” with corned beef, “Elsie’s Famous Italian” with ham, cappy, and salami, or “The Falafel.”

Then there’s the do-it-yourself pickle sandwich with a choice of vegetables, meats, cheeses, and sauces like Sriracha mayo, hummus, or wasabi mayo, for thrillseekers. Or you can also try a “roll-ups” using sliced cucumber as a wrap, as in wakame sushi, but with a twist.

Homemade Pickles of Chill Dill

“We want to take a pickle that is usually known as the side item, and move that to the center, to the star of the plate,” said James Dauenheimer, co-founder of Chill Dill, based in their warehouse-converted-to-kitchen in Tampa, Florida, Fox 13 reported.

“One day, I was crazy enough to ride my bike to Bearss Groves and get cucumbers. Then I drove and got the Mason jars, came home, looked up a couple of recipes, and said I am going to give it a try.”

Ever since, he and a team of two or three pickle fanatics proudly pump out pickles, up to 150 jars a day or 3,000 a month.

Up until now they have been distributing pickles across Florida, but hope to go nationwide.

McPickle

McDonald’s Australia recently played its latest trump card, apparently, on Instagram: The McPickle burger.

It read: “Pickle lovers, it’s the news you’ve all been waiting for. We’re super stoked to announce the launch of our brand new McPickle Burger,” it said. “It’s time to tuck into juicy, flavoursome pickles layered between melted cheese, ketchup sauce, and toasted sesame seed buns. It’s sure to be a treat for all your senses. #dailynuggets #mcpickle #pickleoverload #maccas #imlovinit”

But it appeared to be only a test run, to fathom maybe just how deep the Aussie craving for the pickle really runs. McDonalds responded to its own post on Instagram, “Available till yesterday.” But this April Fool’s Day’s joke—according to the many disappointed reactions on Instagram—not everyone was lovin’ it.
