The Queen Mary 2 cruise liner sailed into New York’s harbor near the Statue of Liberty Saturday, July 1, in a race called The Bridge.
It outstripped its competitor trimarans, which are the fastest in the ocean racing world, according to The Bridge’s website.
The vessels started out from the Saint-Nazaire bridge on June 25, a day and a century after the first American soldiers arrived in Saint-Nazaire, France, to aid the Allies during World War I.
The race was a celebration of a century of “exchanges and cultural legacies” between the France and the United States, the race website states.
Saint-Nazaire is well known for its shipbuilding, and is where Queen Mary 2 was built in the early 2000s.
The 1,131-foot-long cruise liner, carrying some 3,000 passengers, easily beat the trimarans in the 3,626-mile race. The yachts are expected to cross the finish line sometime later in the week.
