Senator Says Culture and Tradition Are Important Because ‘Without It We Are Aimless and Lose Our Way’

Jacob Anderegg, a Utah State senator for District 13, saw Shen Yun for the first time with his wife and two adopted daughters.

“It’s beautiful, very very beautiful. And it’s a part of Chinese culture I think that is disappearing, so I like that they are restoring it and showing people the richness of the culture.”

Lizzie, the elder of the two daughters, enjoyed the many elements of the performance.

“The dancing, and the clothes, and the fans, and the napkins, and… pretty much everything,” she said.

Senator Anderegg learned that Eastern and Western cultures have some things in common.

“They have a lot of similar beliefs as I have growing up, and it’s interesting because you always believe your cultures are very very different, and when you really get down to the basics of it you’re very much the same,” he said. “The belief in God and a belief in a divine purpose for us on life, and it was really cool to see that.”

He thought the message of the last piece was meaningful and educational.

“The finale was good, it kind of showed I think what many believe will happen to those who are bad people and what will happen to those who are good people.”

“We should be good to each other, and through your culture you can teach those traditions, these art forms, dance, song, you can teach it to your children so that they can carry it on to their children and all through the generations, that was really cool. Because without it we are aimless and lose our way.”
