A photo of an egg surpassed Kylie Jenner’s birth announcement to become the most liked Instagram post ever, on Jan. 13.

The world_record_egg account from Egg Gang only has one post, a spotted brown egg on a plain white background. But that simple image is now the most liked post on Instagram. It had surpassed 33 million likes as of the time of this publication.

Kylie Jenner was the previous record holder when her post surpassed singer Beyonce’s post showing her pregnant belly, and soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo’s announcement of the birth of his fourth child, Variety reported. The Jenner post shows a photo of the newborn holding Jenner’s pink, perfectly polished thumbnail. The post now has over 18 million likes and is in second place to the egg.

In response to the news that her Instagram title was lost, Jenner posted a video to Instagram, wearing huge sunglasses, showing her breaking an egg onto the ground and letting it ooze across the asphalt as if oozing across the surface of a cast iron pan.

“Take that little egg,” she captions the post, which already has over 3 million likes after being posted for less than day, quickly catching up to the Egg Gang’s record. The Egg Gang’s egg was first posted on Jan. 4.

Despite having only one post, Egg Gang’s account has 3.2 million followers. Jenner, with an account full of over five thousand posts of her cosmetic line, modeling shots, photos with her famous family members, and photos of her child, has 123 million followers.

Instagram’s Growth

Instagram was purchased by Facebook in 2012, for $1 billion. At the time, about 30 million people used the app. By 2018, Instagram reached one billion users, according to The Washington Post.

And that huge reach can sometimes have a detrimental effect. Travel photos that surge in popularity on Instagram can bring a huge new amount of tourists to a location, even when that location can’t support all the new visitors, sometimes bringing detrimental effects.

Iceland is one of the most popular destinations among social media users, according to Today. Because of that, it puts some of the countries’ landmarks at risk from the number of people that now come to take selfies and show off images of Iceland’s destinations to their Instagram followers.

In 1990 Iceland had 142,000 tourists. In 2018 it had more than two million, mostly travelers from the United States.

“I guess we didn’t even know this existed until Instagram,” traveler Jarrah Kennedy told NBC news correspondent Kerry Sanders, via Today. “Then we looked at the images and hashtags of the Blue Lagoon, and we thought, ‘Wow, let’s go!’”

Under the hashtag #bluelagoon 1,301,723 posts show up on Instagram. Most are beautiful, even mysterious images, which are often irresistible to people looking for their next vacation destination. Blue Lagoon is one of Iceland’s most visited attractions, and the lagoon boasts health benefits, according to National Geographic.

Instagram users have promoted such destinations so well, that conservationists are trying to get Instagram users to skip out on geotagging posts. And some destinations are considering limiting the number of visitors they allow in, Today reported.
