State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said on Tuesday that the United Nations Security Council’s resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza “should be implemented”—despite the United States’ abstention from a vote on the matter this week.

While U.S. State Department officials denounced Hamas’s recent rejection of the same resolution, Miller said in a press briefing that a cease-fire and the release of hostages will ultimately have to be “secured through negotiations.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Tuesday that his government will not accept Hamas’ “delusional” conditions for a cease-fire in Gaza. Hamas is demanding an end to the war and Israel’s full withdrawal from the Gaza Strip.
