Lanterns filled the skies as hundreds gathered on Feb. 16 in Pingxi, Taiwan, to send their wishes for the Lunar Year of the Pig.

The sky lantern festival began in 1999 in New Taipei and is held to mark the end of the Lunar New Year celebrations.

Attendees hand-wrote wishes for the coming year on colorful sky lanterns, most hoping for good health for family and friends.

Hsiao Tsu-chieh, a three-year-old participant, wished to “become very rich”, to the amusement of his mother and sister.

The Lantern Festival marks the end of the Chinese New Year celebrations.
