A man resisting four police officers got ahold of one of their tasers and shocked three of them with it, surveillance video from a Brooklyn, New York, street shows.
The video shows two police officers walking into a deli on Nostrand Avenue, in the Prospect-Lefferts Gardens section of Brooklyn on April 21 at around 6 p.m. Two more police officers drove up in an unmarked car and headed to the deli.
One officer pulled out a yellow Taser as the suspect tried to push his way through the officers.
The video shows that police manage to pin him for a brief moment and hit him with a baton, but the suspect breaks loose after wrestling with them and then runs away while pulling up his pants.
The suspect was arrested a block away, according to the New York Post.
The man fit the description of someone wanted for cellphone robberies. He was on wanted posters for five incidents of theft since February, according to the Daily News.
When the officers first approached him, he ran into the deli and jumped over the counter, before trying to burst out of the deli through the crowd of officers.
Video obtained by CBS New York shows police running after and eventually tackling the suspect in the street near parked vehicles.
“I heard the cops saying ‘Stay down! Stay down!’ because they had the guy on the road,” said a woman interviewed by CBS New York. “Soon after, many cops came and surrounded him.”
The suspect was hit with the Taser twice, once during the first struggle, and once during the second encounter, because he refused to drop the Taser he took from one of the police officers, CBS reported. The suspect ripped the Taser prongs out of his back but was still eventually subdued.
“He wasn’t fighting when he got arrested. He had his head down and he went into the car,” said the woman.
The suspect was taken to Kings County Hospital after his arrest. The officers were taken to Brooklyn Methodist Hospital and are in stable condition, according to Gothamist.
The suspect’s identity was revealed as Anthony Salgado. The 25-year-old’s charges include assault, resisting arrest, criminal possession of a weapon, and grand larceny.
“This goes to show the threats and dangers that our brave NYC Police officers face every day in keeping our city the safest big city in America,” NYPD spokesperson Phil Walzack told CBS.
When Tasers Don’t Work
Police shot a man in Florida after he grabbed an officer’s taser and pointed it at police, the Miami Herald reported.
The man was initially rescued by a passerby after he got into a crash. His car went through a fence and into a small lake. He was bleeding from the ordeal, and acting strange when dealing with first responders.
Body cam video obtained by the Herald shows first responders and Jahmal Parker standing near the back of an ambulance. Officers asked Parker to sit but he refused. One officer can be seen pointing a taser at the man. Parker grabs the Taser from one of the other officers and a Taser sound is heard, although it is not clear whose Taser is firing.
Parker is then shot by officers and falls near the front of the ambulance.
The Miami Herald said Parker was shot in the leg, and survived, in the March 2018 incident. Police had been called to the scene only after he ignored orders from a Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission officer.
According to legal documents regarding the investigation into what caused the police to fire their weapons, Parker seemed dazed at the scene. He was only shocked by one of the officers after he took possession of the other officer’s Taser. The Taser had no effect on Parker. When Parker tried to use the Taser, that is when he was shot. Two of the bullets hit Parker, one in his
right knee and one in his left thigh.
Parker was treated by paramedics who were already at the scene. He was then airlifted to a hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries.
